How Cotyledons help in the germination or growth of seed to form a plant ?
A cotyledon is a significant part of the embryo which is present in the seed of a plant. Upon germination, the cotyledon usually becomes the embryonic first leaves of a seedling.
Dicots have two cotyledonds while monocots have one cotyledon.
Cotyledons provide the food for the growing embryo. Cotyledons in dicots act as major photosynthetic producers untill true leaves arise after germination.
Cotyledon of monocots is highly modified leaf composed of scutellum and coleoptile. Scutellum is a tissue present in seed to absorb food from the adjacent endosperm and provide it to growing embryo.
