Question

How do leguminous plants help in nitrogen fixation?

Open in App
Solution

These plants have bacteria known as Rhizobium. It lives symbiotically in the root region of the leguminous plants, by infecting their roots and forming nodules on them. These nodules are the site for nitrogen fixation. Nodules contain enzymes which convert nitrogen into usable form. This nitrogen is then utilized by plants to synthesize proteins and other such compounds.
