Least count of an instrument is the minimum possible measurement which can be taken from if. Different instruments have different least counts depending on the desired measurement to be taken. Mathematically least count of every instrument is calculated as

least count = value of one smallest division on scale/total numbers of divisions


least count of vernier callipers = value of one main scale division/total no. of divisions on the main scale

= 1/100

= 0.01
