How does fossil fuels cause air pollution?

The combustion of fossil fuels like wood, coal, petroleum etc not only produces energy but also many poisonous gases like carbon monoxide, sulphur oxide, oxides of nitrogen as well as smoke particles. These gases accumulate in the atmosphere and cause pollution.
