Question

how does haemoglobin help in the transportation of carbon dioxide in our body??

Open in App
Solution

About 20-25% of CO2 is carried as carbamino-haemoglobin by blood. The binding of CO2 with haemoglobin is related to the partial pressure of CO2 and O2. When partial pressure of CO2 is high and that of O2 is low as in tissues, carbon dioxide binds more efficiently with haemoglobin and is transported to lungs through blood. When partial pressure of CO2 is low and that of O2 is high, dissociation of CO2 from carbamino-haemoglobin takes place as in alveoli. CO2 is bound with haemoglobin in tissue and dissociates in alveoli where it is released.
