Question

How much heat energy is required to change 100g of ice at -30oC to water at 80oC. (given: latent heat of fusion of ice=355kJ kg-1,and specific heat of ice=2100J kg-1oC-1,specific heat of water=4.2k J kg-1oC-1)

Solution

If Q1= amount of sensible heat required to convert ice at -30oC into water at 00C (ice):-
Q1=mcΔt
 =0.1 kg x (2100 J /kg oC)X (80-(-30))0C
 =23100 joule.
If Q2= Amount of latent heat required to convert water at 00C into water at 800C :-
Q2 = mL
=0.1 kg x 355 kJ kg-1
=35,500 joule
Total heat = Q1 + Q2
=58600 joules
