Question

how to find whether a molecule has dipole moment or not??

Open in App
Solution

Following steps should be taken to find whether the given molecule is polar and has dipole moment.

1) Draw the Lewis dot structure of the molecule.

2) Predict the electron-pair geometry

3) Determine whether the molecule is totally symmetrical (symmetrical molecules are non- polar)

4) Determine the direction of individual dipole moments according to the electronegativities of the atoms. If the forces are equal, the object will not move (nonpolar).
