Hydrogen chloride gas can be subjected to drying only with concentrated H2SO4 but not with quick lime or phosphorous pentaoxide . Explain.

Quicklime and Phosphorus pentoxide are generally not used to dry hydrogen chloride gas as they can react with HCl according to the following equations:

CaO + 2 HCl → CaCl2 + H2O

P2O5 + 3 HCl → POCl3 + H3PO4
