Solution

Let the speed of fast train = x km/hrthen the speed of slow train = x - 15 km/hrthen time taken by fast train to travel 900 km =900x hoursand time taken by slow train to travel 900 km = 900x - 15 hoursBut it is given that fast train takes 3 hours less than a slow train fora journey of 900 kmHence, 900x - 15 - 900x = 3 900 1x - 15 - 1x = 3 1x - 15 - 1x = 3900 x - x - 15x x - 15 = 1300 x - x + 15x2 - 15x = 1300 15x2 - 15x = 1300 x2 - 15x = 4500 x2 - 15x - 4500 = 0

x2 - 75x + 60x - 4500 = 0 x x - 75 + 60 x - 75 = 0 x - 75 x + 60 = 0 x - 75 = 0 or x + 60 = 0 x = 75 or x = -60But x = -60 is rejectedthen, x = 75Hence, speed of the fast train = 75 km/hrand speed of slow train = 75 - 15 = 60 km/hr
