Question

in a galvanic cell how electrode potential of anode increases due to oxidation and electrode potential of cathode decrease due to reduction?

Open in App
Solution

Anode is a place where oxidation takes place, means metal sheds their electron and go into the solution. At cathode metal ions from solution receive electrons so electrons are always consumed here. The concentration of electrons are always high at anode than cathode .And electron moves from high concentration zone to low concentration zone that is from anode to cathode.

So it is the concentration of electrons which increases on anode by oxidation but the electrode potential will be negative. Similarly at cathode concentration of electron decreases.
