Question

In amoeba does the nucleus divide like mitosis or does it just divide? If it divides just like that then there won't be the same number of chromosomes in the daughter cells?

Solution

In Amoeba, cell division is by binary fission which is similar to mitosis but not exactly same as mitosis in multicellular organisms. The number of chromosomes remains same in daughter cells like in mitosis. Here, the chromosomes duplicate before division and then the nucleus divides into two nuclei. Then the cell divides to form two cells with one nuclei each. The daughter cells produced by binary fission are exactly same as the parent cells.
