in some formulas like calcium oxide ,why we use the term oxide can't it be calcium monoxide?

In CaO, oxidation state of Calcium is +2 and Oxygen is -2. Those compounds which have oxygen in -2 oxidation state are called oxide and if there is one oxygen then it may be called mono oxide or simply oxide. so CaO is also known to be calcium mono oxide but we commonly call it as calcium oxide.
