Inertia applies that an object in motion tends to be in motion, but when we ride a bicycle and apply brakes it stops after a certain time, what is the reason behind this?

When we apply the brakes i.e. we are applying the retardation force which opposes the motion of the body.
Because of this retardation force, Velocity of the body decreases continuously and come to rest finally.

If do not apply brakes, bicycle will remain in motion because of the inertia.
