Question

justify why water is soild at 0 degree C and liquid at room temperature

Open in App
Solution

State of a substance changes with temperature. At room temperature the particles of water have sufficient kinetic energy to move past each other and thus have less forces of attraction between each other. Thus, it exists as liquid at room temperature. At 0 degree Celsius, the kinetic energy of particles of water decreases and forces of attraction between them increase due to which water in liquid state changes into ice (solid) at 0 degree Celsius.
