Question

Methane is heated strongly in air to undergo complete combustion. calculate the no. of moles and amount of carbon dioxide formed when 6x102 molecules of methane burn

Open in App
Solution

Reaction Involved-
CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O

1 mol of CH4 reacts with 2 mol of O2 to produce 1 mol of CO2

Thus,6.022 x 1023 molecules of CH4 = 6.022 x 1023 molecules of CO2

Thus,
6 x102 molecules of CH4 = 6x102 molecules of CO2
6x102 molecules of CO2 = 6 x 102 / 6.022 x 10 23 mol = 9.9 x 10-24 mol

Amount of CO2 produced
= (Moles) x (Molar mass)
= 9.9 x 10-24 mol x 44 g/mol
= 435.6 x 10-24 g
