Oersted showed in his experiment the movement of freely suspended magnetic needle when a conductor carrying current is held parallel to the axis of needle and concluded that an electric current has magnetic effect.

He set-up a magnetic needle near a current carrying wire. He observed that on flowing current through the wire needle deflected in such a way that it aligned itself in a perpendicular direction with respect to the direction of current. Moreover, needle moved by 180° upon changing the direction of current.

A current- carrying conductor behaves like a magnet. Direction of the magnetic field is always perpendicular to the direction of flow of current, which also depends upon the direction of flow of current.
