Question

A carboxylic acid C2H4O2 reacts with an alcohol in the presence of H2SO4 to form a compound X .The alcohol on oxidation with alkaline KMnO4 followed by acidification gives the sane carboxylic acid, C2 H4O2. Write the name structure of

(a)Carboxylic acid, (b) alcohol (c) the compound X

Solution

a) Carboxylic acid is ethanoic acid CH3COOH. Commonly known as acetic acid.
b) Alcohol is ethanol CH3CH2OH.
c) Compound X is ester of ethanoic acid and ethanol that is ethyl acetate. CH3COOCH2CH3

Reactions:
1) Formation of X from carboxylic acid and alcohol.
CH3CH2OH + CH3COOH CH3COOCH2CH3 + H2O

2) Oxidation of alcohol with alkaline KMnO4 followed by acidification to form same carboxylic acid.
5 CH3CH2OH(aq) + 4 KMnO4(aq) + 6 H2SO4(aq) 5CH3COOH(aq) + 4 MnSO4(aq) + 2 K2SO4(aq) + 11 H2O(l)
For your grade senstivity reaction can be written as follows:
CH3CH2OH(aq) acidificationalk.KMnO4 CH3COOH(aq)
