P - proteins are defined as proteinaceous material in the phloem which is visible when observed with the electron microscope. They can be termed as structural proteins also. Non-dispersive P - protein bodies are visible, large bodies within the sieve tube. They are formed early during development in young sieve tubes. Once, the sieve element matures, the sieve pores open and these proteins become active in translocation. In about 90% of the angiosperms, once the sieve element matures, the protein bodies do not remain in the lumen of the tube but disperse into the fine filaments.
