Question

P,Q,R and S are four resiatance wires of resistance 2,2,2and 3 ohms respectively. Find out the resistance with which S must be shunted in order that bridge may be balanced.

Solution

you need to make a 2 ohm resistance out of a 3 ohm and something else

shunt resistances follow the rule 1/X + 1/Y = 1/Z

here X is 3 and Z is 2

so

1/3 + 1/Y = 1/2

change the number fractions to have the same bottom number, in this case 6 (= 2 x 3)

so

2/6 + 1/Y = 3/6

so

1/Y = 1/6

so Y = 6 ohms.
