Question

Sulphur and chlorine are oxidizing and reducing agents ?

Open in App
Solution

Oxidizing agents are those compound which carry out oxidation of other substance either by providing oxygen or by removing hydrogen from other substance. Reducing Agents are those compounds which carry out reduction of other substance either by providing hydrogen, or by removing oxygen from the other substance.

For ex: H2S + Cl2 --> 2HCl + S

Here, H2S gets oxidized to S(removal of H) in presence of Cl2 it means Cl2 is an oxidizing agent.

Cl2 is reduced to HCl in presense of H2S therefore S is reducing agent. (H is being added or removed so the oxidizing or reducing species is Cl or S).
