Question

The refractive indices of three media are given below.

A =1.65 / B =1.71 / C=1.47A ray of light is travelling from A to B and another ray is travelling from B to C.In which case a) the refracted ray bends towards the normalb) the speed of light increases in the second medium?

Solution

(a) We know that, a substance having higher refractive index is optically denser than another substance having lower refractive index.
It means B is optically denser than A, and when light ray goes from a rarer (A) to denser medium (B), it bends towards normal.
When light ray goes from B (denser) to C (rarer), it bends away from the normal.
(b) When light ray goes from B to C, the speed of light increases in the second medium (C).
