Two objects of masses 100g and 200g are moving along the same line and direction with velocities of 2 ms-1 and 1 ms-1 respectively.They collide and after the collision, the first object moves at the velocity of 1.67 ms-1.Determine the velocity of the second object.
Here m =100g = 0.01kg
m' = 200g = 0.02kg
u = 2m/s and u' = 1m/s
v = 1.67m/s
According to the law of conservation of momentum:
Total momentum before collision = Total momentum after collision
mu + m'u' = mv + m'v'
0.01x2 + 0.02x1 = 0.01x1.67 + 0.02xv'
.02+.02=.0167+.02v'
thus, we get
v'=1.165 m/s
