Solution

Organisms which do not cause diseases themselves, but spread infections by transferring disease-causing microorganisms from an infected person to others are known as vectors. Female Anopheles mosquito is a vector for malaria and Plasmodium is malaria parasite. When ingested by a female Anopheles mosquito, malaria parasite undergoes development within the mosquito before they are infectious to humans. The time required for development in the mosquito (the extrinsic incubation period) ranges from 10 to 21 days, depending on the parasite species and the temperature. Both male and female Anopheles mosquitoes are nectar feeders. But females suck blood of humans to supplement substances such as protein and iron to develop their eggs. Since the males do not suck blood so they do not spread malaria. However, when any other mosquito bites an infected person, it will not transfer the malaria parasite to other person because malarial parasite (Plasmodium) develops only inside the female Anopheles mosquito.
