Question

Weight of an object on earth is 196 N. What will be it's weight on the surface of the moon, if acceleration due to gravity on the surface of the moon is one sixth of that on the earth? What will be it's mass on the surface of the earth and on the surface of the moon?(g=9.8m/s2)

Solution

weight of an body is equal to the product of the mass of the body and acceleration due to gravity . since the acceleration due to gravity is one sixth on the surface of moon as that of earth therefore the weight of the body will be one sixth on moon as that of on the earth i.e ( 196 /6 = 32.66 N)

Mass of the body (m) can be found out by

weight = mass * acceleration due to gravity

196 = m * 9.8

m = 20 kg

mass of a body is independent of gravity therefore the mass of the body will be same on the surface of the moon too
