Question

what are critical constants and what are their significance?

Solution

Critical temperature (Tc) :

The critical temperature of a particular substance is the particular temperature at and above which vapor of the substance cannot be changed into liquid state whatever pressure is applied at that temperature. Every substance has a fixed value of critical temperature.

Critical pressure (Pc) :

The pressure corresponds to Tc is considered as criticla pressure.

Critical volume (Vc) :

Molar volume of gas occupied at Tc and Pc is called as critical volume. or molar critical volume.

Significance of critical constant :

During which temperature the condensation of a particular gas will not occur is defined by the critical point as during this point one can apply massive amount of pressure to a gas in a closed container but it do not change its state to liquid molecules and can only become highly dense. This temperature allow you to know about the maximum kinetic energy of substance which a molecule can posses during the phase transition due to which the intermolecular forces between the molecules decrease.
