Neuroglial cells are also known as Neuroglia, Glia or Glial cells. These are the packing and supporting cells found in the brain and spinal cord.
They are of different types – astrocytes, oilgodendrocytes and microglia.
Astrocytes separate and provide mechanical support to neurons. These also insulate adjacent neurons so that impulse only travels from one neuron to another neuron over the synapse. They also play a role in maintaining the blood – brain barrier.
Oligodendrocytes form myelin sheaths around the axon.
Microglias are phagocytic as well as scavengers by destroying pathogens and removing dead neurons.
