Question

what are neuroglial cells?

Open in App
Solution

  • Neuroglial cells are also known as Neuroglia, Glia or Glial cells. These are the packing and supporting cells found in the brain and spinal cord.
  • They are of different types – astrocytes, oilgodendrocytes and microglia.
  • Astrocytes separate and provide mechanical support to neurons. These also insulate adjacent neurons so that impulse only travels from one neuron to another neuron over the synapse. They also play a role in maintaining the blood – brain barrier.
  • Oligodendrocytes form myelin sheaths around the axon.
  • Microglias are phagocytic as well as scavengers by destroying pathogens and removing dead neurons.
