what are RAY FLORETS and DISC FLORETS?
Ray florets | Disc Florets |
Petals are laterally fused, elongated with three or four small upper lobes. These ray florets look like petals | The petals are fused into a tube with 3-5 apical lobes. Many tiny, vertical florets are tightly packed so that we see only the top of each disk floret. |
Ray florets are either female means they have a pistil or they are neutral & if present they are sterile. | They are either bisexual, or male containing fertile stamen & mostly a sterile pistil. |
Ray florets are arranged around the circumference of flower. | Disk florets make up the center of a flower head. |
