Question

what are the anomalies of lothar meyer classification of elements

Open in App
Solution

Lothar Meyer proposed the periodic law that the physical properties of elements are a periodic function of their atomic weights. He plotted a graph between atomic volumes and atomic weights of elements and observed that the elements with similar properties occupied similar positions on the curve. Thus most strongly electropositive elements occupied peaks on the curve, less strongly electropositive alkaline elements occupied descending positions and electronegative elements occupied descending positions on the curve. Its anomalies were as follows

  1. Hydrogen was not included in the table
  2. The table also lacked Be and In
  3. Elements with similar properties and valency fell under one another.

Though the last point forms the bases for the classification of elements, it could not be explained by Lothar meyer at that time
