what are the different types of diseases ?
There are many types of diseases. Disease are categorised based on different criteria. Diseases in one category can overlap with diseases in other category. Major categories of diseases are as follows:
The most basic categories of diseases are of infectious and non-infectious disease.
Diseases caused by external infectious agents such as pathogenic micro-organisms are called infectious diseases. Ex: diarrhoea is caused by viral or bacterial infection. These type of diseases are further categorised based on the causal organism such as viral, fungal, protozoa, etc.
Diseases caused by non- infectious causes are called non infectious diseases.Ex: some cancers caused by genetic abnormalities, high blood pressure caused by excessive weight and loss of exercise, malfunctioning of any body part as in heart attack and arthritis, deficiency diseases such as marasmus, etc.
Acute diseases and chronic diseases are another categories of diseases based on the duration for which the disease persists.
Acute diseases last for only a short period of time. However, they spread rapidly in the body showing intense symptoms. They can be mild, severe, or fatal. Ex: common cold, cough,etc
Chronic diseases last for a longer period. They can also be mild, severe, or fatal. Ex: diabetes, kidney stones, elephantiasis, cancer, arthritis, etc
Acquired Diseases- Diseases that are acquired by the individual during his/her lifetime are called acquired diseases. They can be infectious diseases such as AIDS or non infectious such as anaemia.
Congenital disease – When a disease is present in an individual from birth it is called cogenital. Ex haemophilia, autism, Sickle cell anaemia, Klinefilter’s yndrome, etc
Some other categories of diseases are endemic diseases, pandemic, etc
