What are the disadvantages of using a series circuit and advanatges of using a parallel circuit

For a group of resistors we can increase or decrease the resistance offered by an electric circuit by connecting the resistors in series and parallel respectively. This can be thought of as the main advantage behind the parallel and series combination. However this can also be an disadvantage as sometime we might not get the required resistance out of the circuit.
