Question

what do we mean when we say that REDATIVE MAGNETIC PERMEABILITY IS >1000?

Open in App
Solution

It is relative magnetic permeability not redative.

Relative magnetic permeability is also called relative permeability, it means

µr = µ/µo

Here, µr is the relative permeability

µ = absolute permeability of the material

µo = permeability of free space.

Permeability of a substance is its ability to support formation of magnetic field witin itself. Thus relative permeability gives “how much times more is the ability of the substance to support formation of magnetic field within itself more than the free space.”

µr > 1000

=> µ/µo > 1000

=> µ > 1000 µo

This means the ability of the material to support formation of electric field is 1000 times more than that of free space.
