Bacillus thuringiensis is a bacterium, it produce chemicals or toxins known as a Bt toxins that are harmful for the insect and also result into their death. This property of Bacillus thuringiensis is exploited and used as an insectcides. Bt cotton is a result of this only, a gene that encode for the Bt toxin was inserted into the cotton so that it can produce same toxin to kill the insects feeding on its leaves.
