Solution

Sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride is formed when carbon dioxide is passed into ammoniacal brine.

NaCl + CO2 + NH3 + H2O NaHCO3 + NH4Cl

This is the first step in formation of soda ash or sodium carbonate by Solvay or ammonium-soda process.

Sodium bicarbonate is used to manufacture sodium carbonate or soda ash. Soda ash is used in manufacturing industries like glass production, manufacture of detergents and cleaning agents and it is used as a natural water softener and food additive in cooking at home.
