What happens when HCl gas is passed through saturated NaCl solution

NaCl in water ionises reversibly as,

NaCl <------> Na+ + Cl-

After adding HCl the conc. of Cl- ions increases and due to common ion effect leads to precipitation of NaCl.
This process is used to purify NaCl.
