A reaction in which air is used to oxidize another substance, as in the contact process for the manufacture of sulphuric acid (sulfur dioxide oxidized to sulfur trioxide):

2SO2 + O2 --------> 2SO3

and in the souring of wine, where alcohol (ethanol) is oxidized by atmospheric oxygen to produce (ethanoic (acetic) acid).
