Solution

Dear Student,

The answer to your question is as follows.

Soil conservation is the preservation of soil from being eroded and destroyed due to the removal of its topmost layer through overgrazing, deforestation, landslides, rains and floods. The four ways to conserve soil are:

  1. Contour barriers- Building barriers along contours using stone, grass and soil. Trenches are also made to collect water and prevent it from running off with soil.
  2. Terrace farming- Creating terraces on steep slopes for farming in order to reduce surface run-off and soil erosion.
  3. Intercropping- Growing different crops in alternate rows and sowing at different times to protect soil from rainwash.
  4. Shelter belts- Planting rows of trees in coastal and dry regions to prevent soil erosion through wind.

Hope this provides a solution to your question.

Best Wishes
