what is nitrogen fixation? what is its use??

Open in App
Solution

Nitrogen fixation can be defined as the process of conversion of atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into ammonia for assimilation by plants. For the atmospheric nitrogen to be utilized by plants, it needs to be converted into ammonia by free-living or symbiotic bacteria such as Rhizobium. These bacteria contain an enzyme named nitrogenase which combines nitrogen with the hydrogen resulting in the production of ammonia which is further converted into organic compounds by the bacteria.

Nitrogen fixation allows the plants to use atmospheric nitrogen which cannot be used by any other method.
