What is the difference between menstrual cycle in monkeys and humans??

Cyclical changes in ovaries, accessory reproductive ducts and hormones in primates during reproductive phase is called menstrual cycle. Primates can copulate in any season.

  • The menstrual cycle for humans is 28 days and the menstrual cycle for chimpanzees is 35 days, gorillas is 30 days.
  • In humans menarche occurs at about 12 years, in monkeys it starts at about 4 years and in other monkeys it occurs at about 6 years.
  • Duration of cycle is 3-5 days in humans, about 14 days in chimpanzees and 2-3 days in gorillas.
