Question

what is the difference between turgor pressure and pressure potential

Open in App
Solution

Turgor pressure Pressure potential
It is the pressure exerted due to osmotic entry of water from a region of high water potential to low water potential. Due to the entry of water into a plant cell, the cytoplasm exerts a pressure known as pressure potential.
Due to turgor pressure the plasma membrane is pushed against the cell walls. When water passes through the cell wall and cell membrane, the total amount of water present in the cell increases which causes exertion of an outward pressure.
It is responsible for extension in cell. Plant maintains turgor using pressure potential.
