Solution

The method used to separate:

  • Sugar from syrup- evaporation leaving behind sugar crystals along the side of the vessel.
  • Ammonium chloride from mixture of sand and salt - Sublimation, as ammonium chloride will sublime and will deposit on the walls of the inverted funnel.
  • Kerosene oil from water- using separating funnel, as kerosene is lighter than water, water will be present in the lower part and kerosene will be present in the upper part.
  • Acetone from water- distillation. Acetone boils much earlier than water, therefore, it will vapourize the vapours can be cooled and condensed in a separate beaker to obtain acetone.
  • Petrol and kerosene-fractional distillation, the boiling point of kerosene is less than petrol, therefore, kerosene will be obtained in higher columns and petrol will obtained from lower columns.
