Question

what is the role of sulphuric acid in electrolysis of water?

Open in App
Solution

Pure water is poor conductor of electricity as it is very weakly ionized. sulphuric acid is mixed water to introduce ions in it so the conductance of the water increases which make the reaction faster. However it does not affect the chemical composition of the reactant or products, it only increases the speed of the reaction. Thus it is playing the role of a catalyst.
