Sound is mechanical wave. It requires a medium to travel. The more closer the particle more will be its speed. So the speed of sound varies from medium to medium and it is highest in solid form then in liquid and the least in air.
Speed of sound in air is 332 m/s.
Speed of sound in water is 1500 m/s
Speed of sound in iron is 5120 m/s.
