what was non bramin movement ?
The non-Brahmin movements were initiated by the educated, wealthy and influential non-Brahmins.
 They challenged Brahminical claims to power as they argued that they were heirs of Aryan invaders from the north who conquered southern lands from the Dravidians, who were the original inhabitants of the region.
 Realising that the untouchables had to fight for their dignity, E.V Ramaswamy Naicker, or Periyar, founded the Self Respect Movement. He believed that the untouchables had to free themselves from all religions in order to achieve social equality.
 These assertions were challenged by the orthodox Hindu society, which reacted by founding Sanatan Dharma Sabhas, Bharat Dharma Mahamandal and Brahman Sabha.
 Debates over castes continued beyond the colonial period and are still going on in our times.
