Question

What would be the Pressure Potential (due to turgor pressure) of a plasmolyzed cell, flaccid cell and a swollen cell? Can Pressure Potential ever be negative?

Open in App
Solution

In plasmolysed cells, pressure potential is almost zero.

Flacid cells also have pressure potential zero

In solutions, including the inside of cells, the pressure potential can be negative, zero, or positive. A plasmolyzed cell, where the plasma membrane has pulled away from the cell wall, has a negative pressure potential. In contrast, a turgid cell in hypotonic medium has a positive pressure potential.
