Question

whats the difference between electronegativity and electron affinity?

Open in App
Solution

Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom in a molecule to attract the bonded electrons. It is a relative value. It cannot be measured and has no unit.It is different for every element.

Whereas, electron affinity is the energy released when an isolated gaseous atom accepts an electron to form the gaseous negative ion.It is an absolute value. It can be measured experimentally. It is expressed in kJ/mol.
