Question

When a water insoluble substance X is added to dilute hydrocholic acid a colourless odourless gas is evolved. When the gas is passed through lime water it turns milky.write the chemical equations involved

Solution

We know that the gas which turns lime water milky is carbon dioxide. This gas is produced when dilute HCl reacts with metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates. Since the given substance X is insoluble in water, therefore it is calcium carbonate. Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

CaCO3 + 2HCl → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
