Question

When baking soda is mixed with lemon juice, bubbles are formed with the evolution of gas. What type of change is it? Explain

Solution

Lemon juice is acidic in nature since it contains an acid known as citric acid. Now baking soda is chemically sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). It is a mild base. We know that acids react with bases to form salt and water, and the reaction is known as neutralisation reaction. So, when baking soda is added to lemon juice, then a salt called sodium citrate is formed. The bubbles that are formed are of carbon dioxide gas. Since a new chemical substance is being formed in this change, hence it is a chemical change.
