Under optimum conditions of warmth and moist, C3 is more energy efficient than C4. C4 is more efficient in conserving water and hence works better hen plants are in regions of high temperature and strong light.

Cyclic phosphorylation is more efficient in terms of energy usage, so when the plant is running low on energy it shifts from non cyclic to cyclic mode.
