Louise Sebastien Mercier was a French dramatist and novelist who lived in the 18th century. He lived between 1740 and 1814 and was a moderate who participated in the French Revolution. He believed that printing press was a powerful engine that would sweep away despotism.

Printing press facilitated the production of books in large numbers and made books affordable to most people of the society.This increased literacy and the number of readers increased. The minds of the readers were ignited with ideas of radicalism, equality, liberty and fraternity.

1. Writers like Rousseau and Voltaire developed questioning and radical ideas among readers who questioned the absolute authority of the Church and the State.

2.Political ideas and revolutionary ideas could were written, published and could reach many more people thus further fuelling the rising French Revolution. This encouraged reasoning and debate where old ideals and notions were questioned and discarded.

3. The lifestyle and morality of the royalty was questioned and mocked at. Cartoons and caricatures made fun of and mocked the extravagant lifestyle and arrogance of the members of the royal family and the nobles.
